In our journey through the spiritual gifts, we’ve come to understand that these divine endowments are crucial for continuing the ministry of Jesus. Spiritual gifts, given to us by the Holy Spirit, empower us to serve and build up the church. As we delve deeper into the specific categories of these gifts, today we focus on Word Gifts.
The Importance of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are not just beneficial; they are essential for the body of Christ. God himself determines which gifts each of us receives when we are born again and become followers of Jesus. While some gifts can be sought after, such as those that build up the church, the majority are assigned by God. It’s important to note that even if we don’t possess a particular spiritual gift, we are still called to operate in that area as a spiritual discipline. For example, while not everyone has the gift of mercy, all are called to be merciful.
Understanding Word Gifts
Word Gifts clarify the nature, character, and purpose of God. They help us understand who God is and how we relate to Him. These gifts include teaching, exhortation, prophecy, evangelism, apostleship, pastoring, and ruling. In this discussion, we will focus on three specific Word Gifts: Leadership, Shepherding or Pastoring, and Evangelism.
Leadership
Leadership is a critical gift in the church. Romans 12:8 encourages those with the gift of leadership to lead diligently. Jesus modeled this through servant leadership, emphasizing that true greatness comes from serving others (Mark 10:42-45). Leadership in the church involves vision and direction, rather than administration. Leaders must have the ability to hear from God and articulate a vision for the future. This gift often expresses itself through other Word Gifts such as apostleship, teaching, and pastoring.
Leaders with this gift are essential for building the structure needed for the church’s growth. They are like ranchers, ensuring that everyone receives care, though not necessarily providing it themselves. They are responsible for doctrine, culture, and community within the church and will be held accountable by God for their leadership. This gift is not limited to church roles; many are called to lead in various spheres of life. However, spiritual leadership within the church is unique and requires a specific calling and gifting from God.
Shepherding or Pastoring
Ephesians 4:11-12 speaks of pastors as shepherds given to the church to equip people for works of service. Pastoring is about caring for and nurturing the spiritual well-being of others. This gift involves modeling spiritual maturity, protecting people from error, and providing personal attention and care. Shepherds lead by example, guiding the flock to spiritual nourishment and protecting them from harm (Acts 20:17-31).
Many in the church possess this gift without holding an official title. This gift is about the heart to care for others, often expressed through small group leadership. Shepherds help maintain unity and heal wounds within the community. In large churches, the role of shepherds is crucial for ensuring no one gets lost or overlooked. If you feel called to care for others, consider stepping into this role within your community.
Evangelism
Evangelism is a Word Gift that involves proclaiming the gospel message in relevant ways to unbelievers. It’s more than just a discipline; it’s a divine ability to communicate the good news effectively. Ephesians 4:11-12 and 2 Timothy 4:5 highlight the importance of evangelists in building up the body of Christ. Evangelism involves persuasion and communication, leading people to faith through the spoken word (Romans 10:17).
For those who may not have the gift of evangelism, it remains a discipline. Programs like Alpha provide a structured environment where we can invite others, share meals, and watch God work through the gospel message. Even if evangelism feels challenging, our faithfulness in witnessing is pleasing to God.
Applying the Gifts
As we reflect on these Word Gifts, it’s essential to seek God’s guidance in how we use them. Pray for God to release and stir these gifts within the church. Embrace the vision of leaders, the care of shepherds, and the proclamation of evangelists. If you feel called to any of these roles, speak with your church leaders about training and opportunities to serve.
Let’s pray, asking God to empower us with His gifts to build up His church, care for His people, and reach the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.
